In Memory
of Sadie

My beloved Sadie died at the age of approximately eight years old. She had been battling recurring tumors but she died unexpectedly when she was hit by a car.

We met at a shelter in Atlanta; it was love at first sight. Her early days consisted of fattening up (she was underweight and ragged, but quickly blossomed), exploring local parks, and just generally being a cosmopolitan dog-about-town. After about a year we moved to Prague in the Czech Republic (Central Europe). Sadie learned the language faster than I did and enjoyed a society in which dogs were welcomed in bars and restaurants and could ride on trains and subways.

The last five years of her life were spent in a small house in the woods in South Carolina. She became less active, liking to sleep in the pampas grass like some queen of the jungle. Two more dogs joined the family, and Sadie (ever the diva) sighed and rolled her eyes at each new addition, but I think she secretly liked the role of matriarch of the clan.

No dog was ever more loved. I often looked at her and wondered how a creature could be made so perfect. Sadie kept me warm at night and slept curled against my stomach when I was single, pregnant and scared. I miss her enormously and will feel the void all the rest of my days.
