We had just lost our dog of 15 years and set out to look for another friend.
We have always adopted our babies with the thought that they are less likely
to get a good home than the puppies. We went to a local pet food store where
there was an adoption that day held by the Pet Haven Society. There she was,
she looked like a real beagle, and really acted the part! The lady said that
she had run away and was picked up by the city pound. We took her
immediately. That same summer of 1994, a couple of months after we got her, a
Schwanns ice cream man noticed that she was his sister's dog that had run
away. He brought his sister and her two children to my house to see her and
make sure that she was happy. I will assume that they approved, I have not
heard from them since! The next spring we learned that she had heartworm and
went through the treatment. She survived that well, and is now a part of our
family, actually the head of our family! She is probably about 12 years old
now, we never had a beagle before. Yes it is true, once a beagle owner,
always a beagle owner! She sleeps between us, we had to buy a king sized bed
to be able to fit in. She has the livingroom with all of the white furniture
in it for her window to the world. We expect to be with her for many years,
and probably will adopt another beagle when the time comes.
