Chronicling the life of Clayton and Spenser, with memories of Scooter

October 22, 2007

I got home early last Thursday and took the boys out to the woods. Great jubilation occurs when they know they're going out. Sometimes all it takes is reaching for a pair of socks, they know the drill so well. Anyway, we're out in the woods and Spenser is sniffing just ahead of me when I see the large white tail of a deer. This is not good because Spenser's most favorite hobby is chasing deer, so I yell at the deer to scram. The deer around here are pretty much unfazed by people and it just stands there, so I yell some more. At this point, Spenser picks up his head and looks right at the deer. I am ready with the zapper in case he runs out of the invisible fence, but instead he just looks for a moment and then returns to the work at hand. In a way I'm happy and in a way I'm sad. It's a relief to know that he Spenser is no longer interested in escaping, leading Phillip on a chase and risking injury. But at the same time it means that he's getting old. Once in a while I hope he'll chase that deer, maybe just to the edge of the fence, but with the same spirit that has made him famous.
