Chronicling the life of Clayton and Spenser, with memories of Scooter

May 17, 2007

I know I've mentioned a couple of times how much I miss Scooter visiting me in the bathroom at night while I brush my teeth and wash my face. He used to sit down on the bathmat and monitor the proceedings as if he were a line judge at Wimbledon. And then when I was done he'd follow me in to bed. I do miss it, a lot, but guess what, Spenser has sort of taken over the reins. He used to hang out downstairs with Phillip, waiting for his lights-out snack. Not anymore. Now Spenser follows me upstairs and while I'm brushing and washing, he positions himself at the top of the stairs outside the bathroom door. "Sorry, you can't go in, she has soap all over her face." When I emerge, clean and minty, I say, "Come on, Spenser," and he hops up, goes into the bedroom and plops himself down on my side of the bed. Warming it up, I guess, because as soon as I sit down on the edge he moves right over to Phillip's side. People, dogs alike, we all take comfort in rituals. Spenser and I have a new one to share.
