Chronicling the life of Clayton, Spenser and Scooter

March 6, 2007

Scooter had several bad days last week and lost another pound. He is very thin, you can tell in this photo by his pointy head and haunch. We took him to the vet last Friday and the news wasn't good: his lethargy and loss of appetite are most likely from his cancer, not the chemo, so Scooter is not in remission. The vet talked about a different course of chemo they call "rescue therapy" (the name scares me) and with it a 50/50 chance of remission. But first he wanted to give Scooter an additional dose of one of the prior chemo medicines to see if it would restore his appetite and give him some energy. And it did, Scooter perked up considerably by Saturday. He ate well and a lot, he brought a toy to arriving visitors, and he sniffed and honked out in the woods on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. And although he looks sad in this photo, he has rewarded us with a lot of tail-wagging. His next vet visit is probably Wednesday to talk about the next step. In the meantime, Spenser starts his 17 radiation treatments today. No food or water for 8 hours prior to each treatment, so the water bowls have to come up. Trouble is, Scooter is thirsty from the Prednisone he takes. No one ever said this would be easy.
