Clayton, Spenser, Scooter and Sherman: then and now.
July 7, 2009
Today's chapter is entitled "Clayton's $500.18 Tummy Bug." Yesterday morning I fed the
boys their breakfast as usual. Clayton finished his, then immediately threw up, four times.
This had never happened before, and to make matters worse, it happened on the Monday after the 4th
of July weekend. You see, Spenser died on the Monday of the Memorial Day weekend, he too couldn't hold anything down,
and I suddenly became convinced that we were about to lose Clayton, a fear only strengthened
when I found vomit from Sunday night's dinner upstairs and Phillip saw diarrhea in the yard.
We had both taken the day off, so we called the vet who said bring him in.
They did x-rays and found no obstruction or masses. Excellent news!! (My biggest
fear was a mass.) They gave him anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medication, subcutaneous fluids and told
us not to give him anything, even water, until 7PM. They did some bloodwork, too, and found that his kidney values
were actually improved over last month. More good news! I think the medication tired him out
because he slept all day and didn't even come into the kitchen to help me with dinner. At 7PM I gave him a small
portion of chicken and rice which he held down, then another portion at 9PM, which also remained in his tummy.
And this morning he ate without incident. I suppose I should have waited a bit before panicking, but
Clayton is at least 15 years old so there's not a lot of time to wait, you know? I guess I'd rather spend money than worry.
Oh, and by the way, the vet threw in a nail clipping and anal gland expressing for Sherman. What a deal!
