Chronicling the life of Clayton and Spenser, with memories of Scooter

January 8, 2009

We took Spenser to the vet last Friday for a checkup with the oncologist who treated him two years ago. As you'll recall he had adenocarcinoma back then, a tumor of the anal gland. Dr. Josh found nothing on the examination but he did a needle biopsy of one of Spenser's many lumps, this one on his leg, and it turned out to be cancerous - a mast cell tumor, but probably a slow-growing one since he has had it for quite awhile. As we started to process this information the results of his blood work came back and one of his liver numbers is high, extremely high. But not all of them, and the vet said that this wouldn't "kill him". We're taking him for an ultrasound tomorrow so will know more after that. The liver takes priority right now, then we'll get the tumor removed. Meanwhile, he has become more finicky that I can remember and refuses to eat anything except cold cuts, Perdue turkey meatballs, and homemade liver treats. Too much protein, but I don't want him to lose any more weight; he lost four pounds since his last vet visit. The best news is that he neither acts nor looks sick and of course, has no idea what's going on. But I'm sure you can imagine how we feel. Keep your paws crossed, please, for our Mr. Man.
