The Daily Digital Photo
Chronicling the life of Clayton, Spenser and Scooter

January 23, 2007

Scooter was diagnosed with cancer last week, just a few days after he graciously posed for this photo. He has lymphoma (cancer of the immune system) which is common in many breeds of dogs, including beagles. Because Scooter is only 8 years old and in good health otherwise, we decided to treat him with chemotherapy (far more easily tolerated by dogs than by people). He had his first treatment last week and according to the oncologist is recovering nicely. The tumors shrank a lot and his blood counts are almost back to normal. But Scooter doesn't want to eat despite all the yummy things we bring him so he's still in the hospital, though could come home with a feeding tube through his nose until he remembers how much fun it is to eat. Phillip and I visit him every day and he greets us with a wagging tail before settling down next to us for awhile. The rest of his treatments, we hope, will be as an outpatient, allowing him and us to enjoy as much Scootie time as possible. Rest assured, we will never let him suffer.

I've neglected the Daily Digital for almost two months now -- first I was sick and then Scooter -- but I promise to try harder as the importance of chronicling their lives takes on new meaning. Clayton, Spenser and Scooter are my first pets and so this journey is new to me. I am sorry to share this sadness with you, but am grateful for the comfort and support I know will be there for Phillip and me along the way.
