Chronicling the life of Clayton, Spenser and Scooter

February 20, 2007

I can't believe it either, but here it is: Spenser has cancer too. A few weeks ago we took him to the vet to have his anal glands expressed and the vet felt a small lesion. He said to bring Spenser back for a recheck and two weeks later it was still there, same size. So we brought him to a surgeon at the vet hospital where we take Scooter, and last Wednesday the lesion and the anal gland were both removed. The pathology report came back yesterday: an adenocarcinoma. The margins were narrow, meaning that they believe they got the whole thing but they can't be completely sure, and so they recommend radiation therapy. I don't know how many treatments and when they'll start but when I do I'll certainly let you know. They do think that this will give him several more years, which, since he is 12, is a full life span. If only they could give that to Scooter. Scooter is still in the hospital, improving slightly. We really miss having him at home. Thank-you so much for your emails (and telephone call!), I am so very grateful for your thoughts and prayers and I'm sorry I can't answer every single email. Incidentally, the collar that Spenser is wearing is a terrific alternative to an Elizabethan collar. We bought it from Handicappedpets.com; their customer service is really really superb.
